Re: Death penalty on first offense for drug dealers, rapists and child molesters
|
I agree with Courtlin, there are many cases where men are falsely accused for various reasons, including a getting even and so forth. In addition, I do not like the idea of a one size fits all penalty for a crime. I know someone who was convicted of molesting a child. He basically admitted to putting his hand down the pants of a 12 year old while they were asleep. While I obviously don't condone this sort of thing, it's a lot less egregious than say having intercourse with a five year old. I might support the death penalty for the second offense, but not for the first.
Most of the questions that dealt with such absolutes, I was forced to say NO, even though I usually leaned heavily in favor of the YES attitude. |

Then your answer would be against. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. Your position is well thought out and articulated. It will score you points with the others in your selection pool. |

I think you are forgetting one thing on child molesters. I personally know of two cases where there was no molesting. 3 girls were getting bad grades in a class and decided to get evan with the teacher by saying he molested them. In a different case a girl said an ameture coach had touched her. All of the girls finally admitted they lied. There word has too much power and in these cases the men were exoronorated, but how many weren't? Death can't be reversed. I would vote for the death penalty for third offense. |

What if there is DNA or indisputable evidence? The true point of this question is does the candidate believe in the death penalty? Remember, there is no right or wrong answer. The purpose of the questions is so the other candidates in your selection pool can understand how you would vote if elected. |

I do not have the statistics availiable to me now but I am pretty sure that alcohol and cigarettes kill many more people in any given year. What ever happened to people being held responsible for their own actions ?
Also. With the increasing number of people that have been found innocent after being in prison for 10 and 20 years for a crime they did not commit...How can we still agree to the death sentence for any crime? |

| I thought that these type of questions are excellent for yes or no responses. The extrapolation of "drug", "dealer" & "molester" could bring them anywhere. Ya'll have all heard of offenders within the writing of the law that would not deserve a sentence like this. On the other hand, there are a ton of cases where the opposite happens. A terrible human being is released back into society, because, they could not be held any longer.
Good Luck All |

The Quesiton Committee agrees. Drug dealers have been removed from question 56, placed in a question by themselves (61), with a lesser penalty, but still severe. Continue to provide input on both questions. |

Exactly my reasoning for answering NO to that question, wfaulk4. I liken this question to a performance by comedian Mitch Hedberg where he was asked "Have you ever tried sugar or PCP?". |

SInce I hold that the War On Drugs has been a complete farce there is no rational for grouping any drug violation with the lowest form of human life the child molester. Many things in this country exist only because it has a history of existing, drugs laws are chief among them. Lets not compound the error here.
Now if we wish to enforce the death penalty for child molesters that is indeed another story.

Also the type of drugs, and the age of the minor should play a part in this decision, pretty sure most drug dealers do not check ID. Kinda goes along wth the gasoline on the head and lighting it question. Perhaps in a situation like this a discussion followed by a vote with the Goooh members in your district, prior to your vote, would be the preferred method. |
